Macular degeneration of the eyes mostly occurs as part of the aging process, hence its full name, Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in the aging population. The disease affects the macula, a small spot near the center of the eye where our sharpest central vision occurs. The macula allows us to read, identify faces, watch television, safely navigate stairs, drive, and perform countless daily tasks. A person suffering from AMD would see dim images or black holes at the center of vision and be left with only their surrounding or peripheral vision.

Kick your late night snack habit

Your late night snack may not be unhealthy, but your body may not need the extra energy. If you focus on eating satisfying meals regularly throughout the day, you can reduce the chance that you’ll be feeling hungry later on. Be sure to stay hydrated as well, as thirst can sometimes masquerade as hunger. If you use your night snacking as a way to unwind after a long day, it’s time to establish a new routine. Try listening to music, taking a bath, or getting lost in a good book. Finally, recognize when your body is craving energy because it’s tired. At that point the best thing you can do is go to bed, not refuel through food.

Don’t wait until retirement to find your purpose

Research has made it pretty clear that a sense of purpose and direction in life is connected to a longer lifespan and enhanced wellbeing. In one study, scientists ranked people’s purpose scores based on responses to a questionnaire. They followed the people for 14 years afterwards and found that those with the highest score for purpose lived longer. This was true regardless of age and emotional or psychological wellbeing. Instead of waiting for retirement to determine your purpose and really enjoy life, why not start now? Start the process of healthy aging immediately by locking down your goals and direction in life.

Care for your spirit, not just your mind and body

When we think of health, we tend to think of the physical component. Some even consider emotional wellbeing. Yet the spirit is also a key component of overall health, and it needs attention too. How can you nourish it? Start by making time for your passions. Determine what activities truly excite you and set aside time in your schedule to pursue them. At the same time, it’s good to take a moment to do nothing and be still. Quiet your mind and focus on the present moment. Spending quality time with your friends and family or volunteering to help others are other methods of caring for your soul.

Avoid injury while you exercise

Starting out on a new exercise routine can be exciting, but it’s important to use caution to avoid injury. If you get hurt it can put a serious damper on your fitness efforts. First, don’t skip your warm up. Your body isn’t designed to go from resting to exercising intensely, so perform a few gentle exercises to warm up your muscles. You should also slowly build up to intense levels of exercise if you you’re just starting out. Along the same lines, don’t rush your exercises, especially those with weights. Be sure to keep a water bottle with you so you don’t get dehydrated.
