Scientist develops breathalyzer to measure blood glucose

Traditional methods of measuring blood glucose levels involve the invasive practice of using a meter to obtain a small drop of blood from the body. Because it can cause discomfort, many patients don’t comply and put their health at risk. A scientist has now developed a breathalyzer that measures acetone- one of the ketones present that indicates insulin is insufficient. The device will be tested in a controlled setting over the next two years, hopefully moving into testing in uncontrolled settings after that.

Eat more plants to combat metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome consists of four characteristics- extra abdominal weight, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar levels. Eating a diet rich in plants, including whole grains, can treat each of these conditions and reduce the overall risk for metabolic syndrome. For example, three servings of whole grains daily are linked to improvements in blood pressure levels. Don’t worry- you don’t have to switch to a vegetarian diet completely. Just eating more vegetables and whole grains to take the place of less healthy foods will provide some degree of benefits.
