Use positive workouts memories to boost exercise motivation

While some people find it difficult to summon the motivation to exercise, the answer may be as simple as a memory. Researchers at the University of New Hampshire found that remembering a positive workout in the past was enough to spur participants to exercise again. The researchers tested this by having some college students recall a positive workout memory, while others didn’t. Those who recalled the memory showed an increase in fitness over the course of the next week, suggesting all it may take is a little thought to find the motivation to move.

Use weight training to lower type 2 diabetes risk

There is already data to suggest that aerobic exercise has a positive impact on type 2 diabetes risk. Now similar scientific data exists for strength training. Researchers looked at women who hadn’t developed diabetes and noted their exercise habits. Those who participated in either aerobic exercise or resistance training were less likely to develop the disease. What’s more, putting the two types of exercise together was even more effective for lowering risk. The effect is not limited to women, either. Previous research has found that men who regularly train with weights can lower their risk by as much as 34 percent.
